New Years "Catalog" Resolutions

So, for my New Years Catalog Resolution I've decided to take the time and work on cleaning up records. Starting with Serials - not Captain Crunch unfortunately. We, like many other libraries, only keep issues on the shelf for a certain period of time i.e. 6 months, 2 years, etc. So, by using Director Station and the System I'm going to make a point of cleaning up any records that need not stay in the System. This was an issue has been brought to the Cataloging Executive Committee on our last meeting and I thought I'd share it on the blog. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact myself or anyone on the Committee. Have a great New Year!

Data migration to new server

On Mon-Tues, Jan 4-5, 2009, we will migrate our data to new servers. During these 2 days, no cataloging will be permitted. Circulation checkouts only will be done using OFFLINE mode. The Opac will be down for a few hours early Monday morning while the data is being extracted. We expect it to be back up by late morning for searching only. Patrons will not be able to place Holds during these 2 days. If you have any questions, please contact us.
Thanks Jane

E Mail

E mail for the publicl ibrary staff is back up. E-mail addresses have been changed. The new format for e-mail addresses is firtname.lastname@lib.de.us

Email lists are also working. The larger lists (DLA-L)have been converted to the 'Listserv' software. If you post to these lists, you will not receive a copy of your own posts.

The Catalogers list is a distribution list. You should receive a copy of your own post. If you are not on the list and desire to be on it or if you know of someone who should be on it, please let us know.

Thanks
Jane

Cataloging visits

Cataloging Executive Committee
(was Manual Policy)
Report of findings from library visits

The Cataloging Committee visited all of the libraries in the Delaware Library Catalog system between May and August 2007. Here is a report on the findings.

1. Most libraries were using CatExpress to import records. There are a few that are full OCLC members.

2. Most libraries have dedicated workstations and equipment for cataloging. Some libraries need barcode readers or to upgrade their current readers.

3. The amount of staff and staff time dedicated to cataloging is limited in some libraries, especially the small libraries.

4. Most libraries were comfortable using basic Workflows functions and had the necessary components set up. Some libraries had their templates “tweaked” by the trainers for easier use.

5. Catalogers were interested in more training in cataloging rules and procedures and in using other cataloging components of Workflows, such as Directors Station and label printing.

6. Most libraries try to expedite the process from receiving orders to “on-the-shelf” mostly due to limited space for storing items.

7. Some libraries were concerned with brief title entries from circulation and were shown how to set up that wizard for the circulation staff.

8. The catalogers were very appreciative of the on-site visits and felt they were a benefit.

In general, the catalogers understand and can execute the cataloging process in Workflows. Their cataloging environments are not ideal, but adequate to meet their needs. The catalogers would like more training and could benefit from consistent, on-going professional development in the cataloging field. They are, however, comfortable with asking help when they need it and providing help to others when they can.

All
There are snags with the new e-mail system so there is still no e-mail or e-mail lists. Ben is working on it. Sorry for the delay.
